Band

The Band Program at John Hopkins’ Center for the Arts introduces students to the fundamentals of music and instrumental techniques. With instruction spanning brass, woodwind, percussion, and idiophones, students receive high-quality training designed to help them grow as musicians and individuals.

Directed by Mr. Bob Steelnack, the program emphasizes musicianship, collaboration, and personal responsibility through progressive courses and hands-on experiences. Mr. Steelnack’s favorite part of the program is creating an environment where students of all musical levels can learn, thrive, and perform together in multiple concerts throughout the year.

Chorus

The Chorus Program at John Hopkins’ Center for the Arts gives students the opportunity to develop healthy singing techniques, read sheet music, and grow comfortable performing for others. Rooted in a supportive, community-focused environment, the program helps students strengthen their voices while encouraging artistic growth and teamwork.

Directed by Ms. Ana Torres—whose favorite part is watching students blossom into expressive and creative artists through music—students learn to perform both solo and as part of an ensemble, all while discovering and refining their unique sound. Throughout the year, students participate in several concerts and events that showcase their talent and growth. Inspiring rehearsals, memorable performances, and meaningful connections make this program a truly transformative experience for every singer.

Dance

As part of the John Hopkins Center for the Arts, the Dance Program gives students the opportunity to explore multiple styles—including modern, ballet, jazz, and hip hop—while also studying dance history, kinesiology, anatomy, and choreography. With two fully equipped dance studios, separate locker rooms, and a dedicated theatre studio, our dancers have the space and support to grow as artists and performers. Dancers of all levels are welcome in the program, whether they come with years of training or are stepping into the studio for the first time.

Under the direction of the talented Mrs. Erin Cardinal, students participate in numerous performances throughout the year and enjoy enriching experiences through workshops and events beyond the classroom. As Mrs. Cardinal shares, the most rewarding part of the program is seeing students develop lifelong skills—creative thinking, collaboration, and confidence—that extend far beyond the studio.

Orchestra

Program students in orchestra will learn proper instrument maintenance and will hone their skills to become a better musician, ultimately preparing them for success in later studies.

Students will identify where their musical strenghts are by introducing them to music theory and basic techniques. Orchestra focuses on the stringed instruments.

Students are encouraged to audition for MPA and the District’s All County Ensemble, as well as the Florida Music Association’s All State Orchestra. These opportunities are available to all 7th and 8th Grade students!

Theatre

The Theatre Program at the John Hopkins Center for the Arts gives students the opportunity to explore the many facets of performance—acting, directing, design, and technical theatre—while developing confidence, creativity, and collaboration. Our state-of-the-art facilities include a full proscenium theatre with a tech and lighting booth, two costume and makeup dressing rooms, and a connected stage-side classroom.

Under the direction of Mr. Samuel D. Walker Jr., students dive into an exciting blend of coursework and hands-on experiences. From set construction in the tool room to immersive rehearsals and live performances, every aspect of the program helps students build their creative voice and express their stories in unique ways. Engaging classes, collaborative rehearsals, and dynamic performances are the true highlight of the program, as Mr. Walker puts it!

Visual Arts

Students in the Visual Arts program at John Hopkins will develop their creativity and technical skills through a diverse range of artistic media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, ceramics, and digital art. Through hands-on projects and guided instruction, they will learn to express ideas, emotions, and perspectives in innovative ways, building both artistic confidence and a strong foundation in visual communication.

As part of the curriculum, students will also study influential artists, artistic movements, and cultural traditions from around the world, gaining an appreciation for how art reflects and shapes human experience. Their dedication and talent extend beyond the classroom, with many students showcasing their work in local and national exhibitions—earning recognition and awards that celebrate their artistic growth and achievement. As the highest-performing arts department in the entire district, John Hopkins takes great pride in the excellence, creativity, and commitment our students demonstrate through their art.
